Hiking in Transylvania

Nestled in a remote corner of Eastern Europe, Romania remains a country steeped in mystery and intrigue. You will discover the rich tapestry of this fascinating nation as you weave your way through mountain villages, medieval towns and beautiful countryside. Now is the time to uncover the hidden treasures of this little-visited country and discover its unique beauty.

Heart of Transylvania. You start with a visit to Bran Castle and learn about its attack in the 15th century by Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Pausing in the Saxon town of Brasov to admire the wonderful Baroque architecture, you then head into the hills above Zetea on foot.

In medieval Sighisoara, spires and battlements soar into the sky. A hike through lovely countryside brings you to Biertan and its impressive church.

Painted Monasteries of Bucovina. Travelling north through the picturesque Carpathian Mountains, you stay with local villagers gaining a real insight into country life. This base is perfect for exploring the UNESCO World Heritage monasteries in the surrounding area. Most date from the 15th century and are covered in beautiful Orthodox frescoes.

A Night with Shepherds. On this holiday you have the option of spending a night in the hills with shepherds. This involves sleeping in a ‘kober’ – a very basic bed, covered on all sides and which can be moved from place to place. Blankets are provided, but you will need to take a sleeping bag as well. Facilities are very basic; there are no toilets or showers and you must wash in a spring – but this adds to the adventure!
